The weekend

9 februari 2017 - Cambridge, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hi all!

Better late than never, so I will tell you about my weekend and the current plans for the next one.

Last weekend I had hoped my group members would go for a drink after work, as one would think students my age would do (we are with around 5 (Phd) students in the lab), but they didn't.. Well, at least at 5pm - while I could have gone home at 3pm already - I had not heard anything remotely sounding like alcohol I gave up and went home. The volleyball fitness session was canceled so I spent the Friday night relaxing at home. So, on Saturday we had another shot as someone had suggested a drink after our training session. I cycled for 25 min to the gym and it turned out that I again WRONG .. this time at the wrong place rather then the wrong time .. so I biked to the right gym, which was situated only a 10 min bike ride away from my home - great. After training everybody went straight home, again.

By that time I was so annoyed that I was willing to just get a beer by myself if I had to. I found my housemate Rachel on the couch, knitting.., so I asked if she had any plans tonight. Luckily she did not have any, and she was totally up for a party as well.. THANK GOD. So, it was settled, we would discover the city center together. We went to the Castle Bar at first, but it was filled with strange, old people and the music was way too loud so we moved on to the Revolution. It is quite a big building with a bar downstairs, a club on the first floor, and another bar on the third. We first went for a drink downstairs as we were quite early, and I got a precious Amstel beer <3. Around 11:30pm we noticed more and more people going up to the first floor so we followed. Short story: drinks are expensive (all), so you end up drinking strong alcoholic drinks, music is terrible (top 40 sing-a-longs) but improves after 2am, people are a mixture of weird people and students. A lot of girls in terribly tight, short dresses and high heels. It was entertaining however!

Sunday, terrible hangover. It took me about 2 days to recover. Rachel and I went for a brunch at the Relevant which helped getting over the worst part. At 4 o'clock I had to referee a volleyball game at the Leys Boys School which appeared to be just as huge as any college so it took some time to find the gym! In the evening I relaxed at home and saw the last two episodes of Wie is de Mol, so I am up to date on that one too.

This weekend is filled with volleyball. Friday fitness session, Saturday training session and a birthday of one of my team members, and finally Sunday I will enjoy my first game!

Another happy note: I will be in the Netherlands for 1 to 1.5 week at the end of April !! And yes...., of course Kingsday included !

Much much love,

Hi Selas, obviously you are very busy with volleybal, having a drink in bars and discussing with your housemate what to do next. I noted that your understanding of Time has improved but now Place seems to a problem. This can probably be solved by means of a sextant (an antique navigational instrument) that you use to study the configuration of the stars at night. With that you can pinpoint your location on earth with an accuracy of a few square miles.
By the way, the picture of a glass of Amstel beer made me very sad: They call it a "Lager" I remember, and it has "no foam" !!

Selas, just ignore the nonsense above. I wish you a good time, progress with your study and a succeful volleybal career.

    Love and kisses, Opa.

Blijf nog maar even zoeken naar de juiste dranklocatie, bars genoeg toch. Cambridge is niet te vergelijken met Amsterdam en zo te lezen lopen ze nog steeds aardig achter. Leuk dat je kunt exploren met Rachel. Xxxxx
