Wolfson June Event

12 juli 2017 - Cambridge, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hi all,

Again, I've been extremely busy in the lab trying to run the final experiments. Most of them of course failed miserably, as usual. Luckily I'm an excellent writer, so I can make a story with way less then I have now. At least I can go crazy now in my discussion with all I my hypothesis, solving the world greatest mysteries, and a complete PhD of experiments that I still want to do haha.

Anyway, as always I also make time to enjoy my life. So, I decided I wanted to experience a formal college party. At the end of the year, when all exams at basically over, there are a multitude of May Balls, June Events, and Garden Parties organized by all the colleges. The fancier the event (or the more prestigious the college) the more expensive. A few of my teammates were going to the Wolfson College June Event, so me and Rachael decided to go there too. We paid 80£ for a ticket, which was one of  the cheapests. To compare, to go to King's College May ball you pay around 200£.. I guess they expect you will earn it back later anyway with a Cambridge degree.

On Monday prior to the Wolfson June Event I already went to see the fireworks at Trinity College May Ball. You could see them from a bridge close by. It was awesome! It was about 20 min of continious fireworks and they played music, which made the whole thing feel like you were in Disney Land.

On Friday, we had our own June Event. Luckily, Rachael had checked the best way to get there (she was not okay with cycling in a dress, thoo.., British people) so eventually she only made me walk for 45 min on high heels... Stupid girl, haha. And YES, you read it right: HIGH FUCKING HEELS. I made sure I was on fly this time.

We arrived around 11 and the whole college ground was used for the event. They had multiple activities, bars, and places to dance. Everything inside was for free, including food and drinks. There was a massive inflatable slide of 5-6m high and we flashed all the other students when going down ~ but who cares seriously. There was a Sisha smoking area (waterpijp), laser gaming, a silent disco, a bull that throws you off, and those balls that you can get in and then try to walk. There was even a DINOSAUR walking around (freaking surreal).

One of the funniest things however, was to see all those young super nerds all dressed up (but still looking funny as they often júst did not get it right) going wild! It was like they finally had found a place where they were accepted and even respected for who they are, and could just be. Which is of course the case in a place like Cambridge. Really lovely to see!  The only comment on the evening was that we did not really got to meet other people, as everybody had their own group and lots of people were already familiar with each other. But we had great fun anyway.

Another rediculous tradition is the final picture at the end of the night. People here aren't used to partying, and normally everything closes very early (an immense 'irritatiefactortje' when I first arrived). These May Balls and June Events however, last until 5, 6 or even 7 am. The people who 'make it to the end' are called 'survivors' and apparently it's a thing to post a 'before' and 'after' picture on Facebook. If seriously... I had to do that every single time I partied until then.. I should rather post a picture when I'm NOT still clubbing at those times. Well.. I just couldn't do it.. It was too much hahahah.

So, that was my ultimate Cambridge experience. I will never forget it. Sometimes I felt like I was in a movie. Absolutely great!

Many kisses!

PS. My shoes are gone from the lab.......
