First Day

30 januari 2017 - Cambridge, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hi all,

I have two parts this time, the first is just a general story about my first day at the lab and the second a funny story.

PART 1

So, my first day at the lab started quite relaxed as I only had to be there 10:30AM. Which gave me lots of time to make sure I looked beautiful and fabulous on my first day! I was there perfectly on time, 5 minutes too early, and waited for my PI to pick me up from the main entrance .. which he didn't (typical) so I called him later to get me - which maybe came across like I was too late ... uhm nee.

Well, my PI explained me the procedure for the coming weeks, which is basically making sure I follow all the obligatory introductions. Next, he gave me to George, a PhD in his final year, and very pretty. We went to pick up my badge (whoo!) and the picture was quite decent as I looked fabulous - don't forget that part. After I got a small tour through the lab and George introduced me to some other people, all very nice and friendly! When the tour was over I got a stack of papers (safety regulations, meh) to read through for the day.

Nobody asked me - or anybody in particular - for lunch so at 1 o'clock I was starving and in the canteen I found the other members of my group. I was the only one with bread for lunch - how awkwardly dutch .. but at least I won't get fat. I went back to my reading and around 3 o'clock George picked me up to do some cell culture, to practice. It was a bit getting used to, as it was cell culture with cell lines, which I only used during my Bachelor internship but I will be back in the game in no time for sure. George asked me if I wanted to watch him do another one of his experiments - yes please! - so I stayed with him and a technician called George (HAHA, but she's actually called Georgina) and it was lot's of fun really, very funny people.

One downside is that they currently do not have enough space. Until Wednesday I can sit at a desk of someone who is not there now, but after I have to hide somewhere alone in an empty lab to work .. Which is of course not so much fun.. Maybe I will just take a seat in the coffee room for the time being!

PART 2

After my internship I returned home quickly because I had volleyball practice again at 7 o'clock. I had some lasagna left over so I ate that quickly and went for my 25 min bike ride to the gym..! As it is not so cold the last few days, I have experienced some sweating .. which I am not used to and I dislike like it ..

Anyway, I arrived at the gym, about 10 min before the practice started and when I arrived in the girls changing room nobody of my team was there ..! It would have been possible for them to be in the gym already, but when I passed by I had seen the previous group was still busy .. So, I figured I maybe got something wrong about the time and/or location although I was quite sure!

While I was changing I started my 3G network (I still had some left from my dutch contract) and I waited - and waited - for my emails to load. When I was almost dressed (still nobody of my team had come into the changing room) I checked my email for the time which stated: 7 .. AM .. !! Like .. AM ?!! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE ?!

I was just completely 100% flabbergasted, like, seriously? These people seriously get up in the morning at like 6 AM of even worse, 5:30 AM to go to practice ?! Some people are crazy. Like, I can somehow, for a little bit, understand why people wake up more early to go for a swim. You know, to wake up and start the day refreshed after a few laps.. But who has ever thought a serious volleyball practice of two fucking-hours was ever a clever idea? .. Sigh .. well, I will at least try once to set my alarm at 5:30 AM in two weeks (it is every two weeks) and we will see what happens to me .. I guess not much .. hahahaha !!

A longer piece this time. I hope you guys enjoyed it! I have added some random pictures from last week. I will try to take some photo's of the lab soon to upload.

Much love !!

    Knuffels.......

    Hoi Selas.
Funny story. Caused by using "o'clock" in stead of ""AM" or "PM" ?, like I also used to do in my younger days.
Anyway, you will have sorted it out by now. I hope you have noted that there is one hour"s time difference between here and Cambridge, but is not yet known what will happen after Brexit.
    Besos and abrazos. (ref. Google)
