Rain, Uber & ice cream breakfast

7 maart 2017 - London, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hi all!

Last weekend I finally went on a trip to the big city! I made a small, crappy after movie for you to check out in the video folder.

I left Cambridge around 2:30pm from Addenbrooke's to go to the NationalExpress bus that would bring me to London. I was very lucky and booked a return ticket for only six quid (British slang for pounds.., I should be the symbol of integration). When I got in the bus bringing me to the bus that would take me to London - you still following? - I had a major bus 12 déja vu as suddenly at the next stop about 30 students marched in.. The NationalExpress bus was quite good however, with comfy chairs and a friendly bus driver.

When I arrived in London (it took about one hour to get from the suburbs to the centre) I got out at Embankment, right next to the London Eye and Big Ben! I was really happy to be in the big city again. The people, the buzzing, the energy, it all made me feel like I could finally breathe again. I would meet up with my friends of the master's program - Lucie and Isabelle (living in London), Julie (Berlin), and Rebeca (Amsterdam) - for dinner at the Pizza Express. I got the address from Lucie but as I was trying to find the restaurant my battery died and I had to use my own instincts... After a slight detour via Waterloo I actually found the place and I was the first to arrive even! The other girls joined it slightly later and soon it felt like we hadn't seen each other for two weeks instead of two months. After dinner we went to the theater, as we got tickets for the play 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime'. I read this book in my third year of high school (8th grade) so I was particularly excited to see it! When we arrived at the National Theater - which was right next to the pizza place - we found out we had to be at a different venue.... which was a 20-25 min walk from there !! So fast-speed walking through London to the right place, at Piccadilly, where we had to wait a few minutes before we could enter. We were not the only ones who were late though, so that made it less awkward.. The play was really really good! The stage was very impressive, with a lot of technical stuff, and they even god a REAL PUPPY on stage - crowd went wild. I would definitely recommend it!

After the play Lucie and I went for a drink in town with some of her friends. By that time rain poured down.. but thank god I got an umbrella with me. Before we went home we went to someone's place for another glass of wine and we ordered and uber (taxi) to get us there. The driver was an absolute disaster, constantly speeding and breaking, which made us all too sick for wine for at least half an hour.. (we gave him a 2 star rating.. there you go!). The next day Lucie and I woke up around noon and went for brunch/lunch at Borough Market. Sooo much food!! There was food from all different nationalities and it was all delicious <3 We also bought a vanilla cheesecake with brownie base (hehe, jealous already, Finte?) as a dessert for later. After we went to the (speed)boat that would bring us to Greenwich. Apparently they determined the different time zones there - you know, the +1, -1 stuff - which of course I did not know about. An example of my lack of general knowledge.. again.

In Greenwich we met up with Julie and Isabelle. The weather was quite nice, with even some sun (the yellow thing in the sky that you normally only observe in the south of Europe). We all went back together to Lucie's place for some self-made dinner - pasta with Lucie's mushrooms and an insane amount of vegetables... I am not naming anyone but it starts with J(ulie). Rebeca joined in at dinner too and after we went for a night out to Blues Kitchen, a bar in Brixton. Apart from the 10£ entrance and the crazy expensive drinks (UK prices) it was a nice evening. There was even a band on the second floor! The next morning/day Lucie and I enjoyed a lovely morning breakfast with two of our friends, named Ben & Jerry. After we went for a real English breakfast with bacon and eggs at a small cake place somewhere in town with the other girls. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to them as they had to catch their planes back home.. To comfort ourselves after the heartbreak Lucie and I both bought a new perfume which appeared to be immensely discounted when we went to pay - BAM! As we had not eaten that much yet we went to Yo Sushi at Victoria Station before I had to take the bus back home too.

London was entertaining and good, it has been nice to be away for the weekend. However, I was also glad to back in Cambridge again. It does start to feel like home. Especially the clear air, the piece and the adorable housing. I was not even irritated by the absence of any public transport at 9pm.... Yeah Cambridge, a real 'city' you are..haha!

Much love to all
