Savage Immune Cells and Steve

18 april 2017 - Cambridge, Verenigd Koninkrijk

Hi all,

Last week I've had my first actual busy week experimenting. I had to run three different experiments at the same time, with multiple collection points. Luckily, there was almost no one left in the lab as some people were on a conference and other had taken up some free days because of Easter.

As my PI was gone for the week as well, I was supposed to be supervised and helped by the post doc and the technician that were left behind. However, "when the cat's away, the mice will play" so I ended up not seeing the technician before 11am in the morning and the the post doc only on Thursday's .. haha. Me however, I've never done so much hahaha! I'm turning in such a nerd.

So, basically I've set up my very ever first own experiment! Well, it is a repeat of someone else's experiment, but it was my idea to follow up on it and I've made the planning and the extend of it, so if just fééls like it is my own. Everything went so well! My cells looked beautiful, the infection rate was good and the purifications of the different immune cell types went great. I am very eager to get the results now! This can take up to two weeks though, so I have to be patient. Also, I have to monitor my cells are not killing each other - this sometimes happens, as the immune cell sees the infected cell, goes savage, and ends up killing everybody.. moron.

Lots and lots to do! I am very happy to have a bigger project now, and I feel very independent. More and more ready for my definitive own project for 4 years, a PhD!

One final fun note, last weekend I saw the one and only Steve Hawkins in town! He was annoying the beautiful weather like all the rest of us I assume, but quite an exciting experience it was. Ticking off all the Cambridge boxes haha.

Much UK love,
